Practitioners who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about mathematics are essential for young children’s successful mathematics learning in early years settings. Indeed, the All Parliamentary Group for Maths and Numeracy point out that better training in early years mathematical development is essential to start improving children’s mathematical understanding at a young age. East Midlands West Maths Hub provides a range of CPD support for early years practitioners working in a range of roles and at different career stages.
Each year the hub offers work groups that seek to develop practitioners’ early years mathematical subject knowledge. Check the current CPD offer for newer and more experienced early years practitioners. Very experienced practitioners or Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) for early years might consider applying for Early Years Professional Development lead accreditation (EYPD lead) to support them in leading the professional development of other practitioners. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
As an early years teacher in a school, you might consider applying for the ‘Mastery Specialist Programme’ to become a primary specialist in teaching for mastery. This programme run by NCETM trains teachers from across the country. These mastery specialists have a significant impact on the quality of teaching in their own and other schools. Whilst there are some mastery specialists that are early years teachers, many more are needed to support the development of teaching for mastery in early years and to ensure cohesive understanding across early years, key stage 1 and key stage 2. For more information about applying to become a mastery specialist through East Midlands West and to find out when applications for the next cohort open please click here.
We are hoping to announce information and dates regarding our successful CPD for Teaching Assistants programme shortly.
The hub is currently developing a Professional Development Lead programme for early years. If you are an SLE or leader of early years maths and are interested in leading professional development activities in early years maths then please email email@example.com.
