East Midlands West Maths Hub ran an early years counting project in 2017/18 to develop young children’s essential counting skills which are a crucial foundation for future mathematics learning in. The project involved learning about the key components of what it means to be able to learn to count and how to use counting collections resources to provide high quality counting experiences for young children. We worked with a number of schools on this project.

In the counting project, practitioners made notes on key terminology to assist with assessment and discussion of children’s early counting. This is one of the sheets they used. It is a broad summary of one person’s understanding of these terms but offers practitioners a starting point for consideration and further research. Some practitioners found it helpful to keep in their planning files or on a staff notice board as a visible prompt.
