Investigating Mixed Attainment Teaching at KS3

This Work Group will seek to explore the best practices for adopting mixed-attainment Maths teaching at Key Stage 3.  It will establish some guidance for schools who are using or are considering using this approach to maximise impact and learning for their pupils.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The Work Group is intended for secondary practitioners who are currently engaged in, or preparing for teaching mixed-attainment groups, in schools who have implemented or are considering implementing this approach.

What is involved?

  • Three face-to-face sessions (6 November 2019, 16 January 2020 and 5 March 2020) including a live lesson observation of an effective mixed-attainment lesson. One at Primary (KS2) and one at Secondary (KS3).
  • Discussion and debate leading to key points and trialling approaches though Gap Tasks.
  • Compilation of agreed key points guidance for school maths departments.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR SCHOOLS

As participants are contributing to a research project they will be expected to attend all sessions and engage in all aspects of the programme to ensure its success. Participants will also contribute to the evaluation of the programme throughout.
