2017-18 China-England Exchange

We were delighted to take part in our third England-China exchange this year! Two of our primary mastery specialists – Kath Lee from Fairfield Primary Academy and Alison Johnson from Dale Community Primary School spent time in Shanghai visiting schools in September 2017. Fairfield Primary Academy hosted the return visit and we were very excited to welcome the 2 teachers to England in November 2017. We held two open events where we showcased teaching and provided opportunities for post-lesson Q and A. Our showcase events were full to capacity with teachers from all over the region coming along to observe the year 3 and year 6 lessons. These opportunities to see the Shanghai approach to Teaching for Mastery in action were extremely well received and have inspired many.

A huge thank you must go to Fairfield Primary Academy staff and of course the wonderful Fairfield children who were all fantastic hosts. In particular those children who took part in the showcase lessons were absolutely amazing and not in the least bit daunted by the 100 observers! Thank you to all involved.

Mastery of Mathematics

Mastery of mathematics is something that we want pupils – all pupils – to acquire, or rather to continue acquiring throughout their school lives, and beyond. Understanding of teaching for mastery is well advanced in a large number of primary schools. The NCETM has been integral in the development of the teaching for mastery approach, and their website has a suite of resources aimed at deepening understanding and supporting implementation, available here.
