Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics Early Years Work Group 2020-2021

Early years work groups in this project will develop their mathematical subject knowledge in conjunction with understanding the pedagogy that underpins the teaching of it. Understanding of mathematical structures will be explored so participants gain a detailed understanding of how children learn early mathematical concepts.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

This work group is suitable for all early years practitioners but particularly those in their first few years working within EYFS.  This work group is suitable for practitioners from school-based and PVI settings including mixed age classes/settings where there are some children within the EYFS age range.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

Classroom practice will develop through a series of gap tasks where participants try out activities to promote depth of understanding in young children.

  • Engage in setting-based work including gap tasks and evaluation
  • Maintain a log of your professional learning
  • Four full days of face-to-face CPD sessions (in one of the cohorts below)

INTENDED OUTCOMES

As a result of this project, participants will not only be able to ‘do’ mathematics, but will also have the appropriate pedagogical knowledge to teach and support young children’s mathematics. Participants will develop both their knowledge about maths and knowledge about the teaching of maths, developing better pedagogy and being aware of how pupils learn, and how to teach mathematics to young children most effectively.
